Bring as many plants as you like. Each plant brought allows you to select a new plant of your choosing to compliment your existing garden.

What a great way to recycle plants you have in abundance and try new plant varieties and colors at no cost.

Commissioner Kathie Gannon, DeKalb County Commissioner for Super District 6 encourages all neighborhood organizations to publish information in your newsletter, on your website or to your list-serve regarding an upcoming opportunity for citizens to dispose of environmentally dangerous household products.

 

On Saturday, March 31, 8 a.m. to noon at the DeKalb County Central Transfer Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Kensington Road, residents can safely dispose free of charge:

  • Aerosols
  • Batteries
  • Adhesives
  • Flammables
  • Fertilizers
  • Pesticides
  • Automotive oils and other solvents
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Photo Chemicals
  • Hobby and artists supplies
  • Paints and paint-related products
  • Cleaners and swimming pool chemicals

 

Household hazardous waste is classified as products that contain potentially dangerous chemicals and are no longer used. These products should not be mixed with regular trash and can be potentially harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.

DeKalb County encourages residents to take advantage of this opportunity to clear their homes of unneeded or unused household hazardous waste and to help keep county landfills and the environment safe for everyone.

 

Please make sure to bring only items on the items accepted list or they will be turned away.

Items NOT accepted:

  • Bio-hazardous/Bio-medical waste
  • Agricultural waste
  • Ammunition
  • Explosives
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Radioactive materials
  • Non-hazardous waste

The meal was catered by Serendipity catering. Chef Louie has been catering this event for about 5 years. We order enough food so that other shifts can also have a holiday meal. The desserts were provided for by some of the Board members of the Dunwoody North Civic Association.

While we were there, two of the crew had to leave for a call and the other guys showed us their Hazmat truck as well as their other equipment. Anyone can ride on the truck or go up in the bucket if they sign a release.

It has over the years been slowly leaning over and was repaired with two helical piles. The contractor, Rock Solid did a great job. They hand dug and discovered a bunch of AT&T lines under the monument. They called AT&T who stayed there while they were putting the piles in and they did not hit one line including the line to the lights that Jason and Vanessa installed to shine on the monument.

As a bit of background, Mike Smith, Director of Public Works took measurements and spoke with Dunwoody City Community Development about granting DNCA the right of way to rebuild the monument in the exact same footprint in the same spot. If they had agreed then we could have built a new monument that is like the one we have. He said the ground in front of the monument may have been soft when it was built and that is why it is tilting or they did not use large enough footings.

However, the City said we would need to repair the monument. They looked at the permit and saw that DeKalb specified it could not be on the right of way and even gave the footage of where it should be placed. The guy who built it did not abide by the issued permit.

As a result, Vanessa, Sam and Gerri of the DNCA interviewed several contractors to decide who to use.

Dave Davis, a resident of Dunwoody North, who has a pressure washer business said he would not charge the civic association to pressure wash all 4 monuments and signs. He said it is his contribution to the community.

The concert begins at 8pm in the Cole Fine Arts Auditorium. The public is invited.

Admission is free but donations are appreciated.

Concert selections include Korsholm by Armas Jarnefelt, First Essay by Samuel Barber, Radetzky March by Johann Strauss and Symphony No. 40 by W. A. Mozart.

The DeKalb Youth Symphony, under the direction of Earl Kuutti, is the honor orchestra for DeKalb County Schools. This orchestra is made up of 70 musicians, ages 13-18, from public middle schools and high schools throughout the county.

The DeKalb Youth Symphony has entertained summer audiences internationally in Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck, Austria; Lucerne, Switzerland; Paris, France; Budapest, Hungary; Prague, Czech Republic; Rome, Florence and Venice, Italy; and most recently in Montreal and Quebec City, Canada.

Originally the Dunwoody North signs were redwood stained with white letters. They were erected by the Dunwoody Home and Garden Club on North Peachtree Road and where the monument is now on Tilly Mill Road.

In the mid nineties the signs were getting very old and tired. Dunwoody North residents were interested in an identity and a logo. The signs and the monuments designed as our logo. It was decided we would place signs at the 4 major entrances to the neighborhood.

Neither homeowner on East Kings Point Circle and North Peachtree Road would grant permission for a sign due to liability concerns. Gerri Penn went to Post Properties and they granted permission for that sign at the present location.

Homeowners on Stonington Road also were concerned or non responsive to the signs and Barbara Dodds obtained permission from the North Atlanta Christain Church for a sign on their property.

When Jolly Development Corporation, Inc. wanted the develop what is now Madison place, one of the conditions of rezoning was they would erect the first DNCA monument per our design at no expense to the DNCA.

The space available for that sign would not support a 4’ x 4’ monument. We agreed to a 2’ x 2’ monument which was erected. Within a short time that monument crumbled, was replaced to the present location with a full monument at no expense to DNCA.

Funds were solicited via the newsletters from residents over a 3 year period. More than 150 homeowners contributed amounts from $5.00 to $200.00. The Dunwoody North Home and Garden Club donated $500.00

The original estimate was $10,000.00 per monument and sign. Chris Weathers, the contractor for the Madisons provided the labor at no cost and secured the bricks for us below cost. North DeKalb Christian Church (before the Meditation Center) sold several palates of bricks at a small % of their value.

On March 10, 1999 Permits for the signs were obtained from DeKalb County.

Monkey grass was originally planted at the base of the monuments to prevent mud stains from soiling the monuments. More recently landscaping was installed. Now the DNCA beautification committee is maintaining the monuments
