Originally the Dunwoody North signs were redwood stained with white letters. They were erected by the Dunwoody Home and Garden Club on North Peachtree Road and where the monument is now on Tilly Mill Road.

In the mid nineties the signs were getting very old and tired. Dunwoody North residents were interested in an identity and a logo. The signs and the monuments designed as our logo. It was decided we would place signs at the 4 major entrances to the neighborhood.

Neither homeowner on East Kings Point Circle and North Peachtree Road would grant permission for a sign due to liability concerns. Gerri Penn went to Post Properties and they granted permission for that sign at the present location.

Homeowners on Stonington Road also were concerned or non responsive to the signs and Barbara Dodds obtained permission from the North Atlanta Christain Church for a sign on their property.

When Jolly Development Corporation, Inc. wanted the develop what is now Madison place, one of the conditions of rezoning was they would erect the first DNCA monument per our design at no expense to the DNCA.

The space available for that sign would not support a 4’ x 4’ monument. We agreed to a 2’ x 2’ monument which was erected. Within a short time that monument crumbled, was replaced to the present location with a full monument at no expense to DNCA.

Funds were solicited via the newsletters from residents over a 3 year period. More than 150 homeowners contributed amounts from $5.00 to $200.00. The Dunwoody North Home and Garden Club donated $500.00

The original estimate was $10,000.00 per monument and sign. Chris Weathers, the contractor for the Madisons provided the labor at no cost and secured the bricks for us below cost. North DeKalb Christian Church (before the Meditation Center) sold several palates of bricks at a small % of their value.

On March 10, 1999 Permits for the signs were obtained from DeKalb County.

Monkey grass was originally planted at the base of the monuments to prevent mud stains from soiling the monuments. More recently landscaping was installed. Now the DNCA beautification committee is maintaining the monuments

Peachtree DeKalb Airport: From May to August 2001, I attended several meeting with FAA representative Ms. Lee Kyker and PDK Airport Director Lee Remmel discussing the procedure to change the flight paths approaching PDK as recommended in the FAA in their FAR Part 150 Noise Compatibility Study, i.e. over the Peachtree Industrial Bd., Buford Highway, I-85 and I-285 corridors. In late August Ms. Kyker called to tell me FAA does not assign flight paths, only the airport owner (Dekalb
County) could request changes in flight patterns.

Had Ms Kyker, Mr. Remmel or the FAA given DNCA this information on May 15,2001 many hours would not have been wasted.

On September 19, 2002 about fifty young athletes will arrive at Brook Run Park, 4770 N. Peachtree St, Atlanta They will be housed for a year in a building in the park near the Peeler Road entrance.

The athletes come under the auspices of DeKalb International Training Center headed by Dr. Marc Gutekunst with the support of the State of Georgia and DeKalb County Government. The athletes have been selected by the National Olympic Committees of eight African nations, Bosnia and Macedonia because of outstanding ability and strong character.

Daily, the athletes will go by bus to various training centers around Atlanta, mainly at Emory, Georgia Tech and Perimeter College South Campus. They will also attend English as a Second Language at the Chamblee Center. There will be cultural exchange activities at DeKalb County schools, colleges and universities. DITC plans to organize athletic exchange training programs and a Track and Field Invitational Championship.

Dunwoody North Civic Association has offered to arrange a welcoming meeting in the Fall of 2002 for the Olympic hopefuls.
Date, time and place will depend on their schedule. This is an opportunity for us and our children to meet people from other
parts of the world whose outstanding talent has won them the chance to train with coaches that are themselves Olympic winners… an opportunity that they would not have in their own developing or war-torn countries.

The Fall reception for the Olympic hopefuls will be posted on our DNCA website: www.dunwoodynorth.org. Look also for our
DNCA meeting signs in the neighborhood and for a notice in the Dunwoody Crier. If you would like to help with the reception for the athletes, please call 770-455-0650. Dunwoody is invited. Please come.

The main annual fundraiser for the Dunwoody North Garden Club is the Holiday Luncheon and Auction, the first Monday of December. They donated at least 50% of what they made in 2001 to the 9/11 causes. They have been very generous to the Civic Association and helped not only by donating money for the neighborhood monuments but also helped with the landscaping around them. The Dunwoody North Civic Association would like to thank the Garden Club for their generosity.

LET YOUR VOICB BE HEARD!
US Senator Max Cleland, (404) 331-4811 and Zell Miller (404) 347-2207 have sought funding for airport improvements at PDK in Senate Appropriations Bill 1178

PDK IS ON THE LIST FOR PRIORITY CONSIDERATION FOR AIRPORT DISCRETIONARY GRANTS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING 09/3O/2002.

In the past “airport improvements” at PDK have resulted in increased operations.

PDK judges its noise abatement success on the number of complaints it receives each month. In May there were 249 noise complaints.

DID YOU MAKE THE CALLS WHEN YOU WERE ANNOYED?
If you did not, you gave PDK your permission to continue to disturb you.

93% of the May complaints were jets. This simply does not support Mr. Remmel’s rhetoric that the larger, newer jets are quieter. When loud aircraft interrupt your peace and tranquility it is your civic duty to call in a noise complaint to (770) 936-5442. Please eive vour address. It is not necessary to give your name but if you want a call back you might use your mother’s maiden name if you prefer not to be identified.

Your DNCA is constantly following the situation and events at PDK. We have regular meetings with the major stakeholders and are trying to minimize the noise issue but we need your help and involvement. If you are bothered by excessive noise, please call!

The DNCA is watching this situation carefully…

Brook Run: On Monday June 24, 2002, Mr. Richard Stogner, confirmed the county has a one (1) year lease with Forging New Tomorrows, Inc. to lease one of the cottages at Brook Run to house Olympic hopefuls from developing countries while they train at other facilities in the county. When asked if any automatic renewal clauses were included in the lease Mr. Stogner said the county and board of commissioners could renew any lease at their discretion.

Mr. Stogner also stated that any county owned land is not subject to zoning and can be used as the county sees fit. This is very disturbing.

The DNCA Board voted to host a reception in the early fall for the athletes to be housed at Brook Run. To make the reception a reality we will need volunteers. Please call,770 455-0650.

DeKalb County purchased the Brook Run property 6 years ago, for $5 million from the State of Georgia, with the stipulation 70% of the acreage must remain green space and the land can be used only for recreational, educational and cultural purposes. Residents of DeKalb were assured repeatedly “nothing would be done at Brook Run without a Master Plan”.

Part of the property has been leased; a GDOT project to cut a road through the property was withdrawn after public opposition prior to signing EDAW, Inc. to develop a Master Plan for the development the Brook Run facility.
Several public meetings are to be held in the next 4 to 6 months.
Watch The Dunwoody Crier and our Website’s Message Board for dates of public meetings.
